Enter the crucible September 1, 2008

Call it trial by fire. I’m five weeks out from the IronMan World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. There’s no hiding from here on in. Since qualifying in Arizona in April, I’ve had a number of training setbacks. Some of them physical and some of them mental. Today is September 1st, so I’ve decided that there are no more setbacks allowed.
I needed a good measuring tool for my current fitness level. Enter the crucible. That’s what I call the network of roads south of Farmington, New Mexico. It’s on Navajo land, and the area is called NAPI (Navajo Agricultural Products Industry). It has everything I need: clean roads, minimal traffic, wind, sun, heat, and long grinding uphill sections. These aren’t climbs like you’d find around Durango. They’re lower grade climbs, but they go on for miles. When combined with the heat and the wind, it’s the perfect training ground for Kona. There is no hiding your deficiencies here. Pure honest analysis of your abilities. It breaks you down to your elements…it peels away any false layers you may have…both mental and physical.
On Saturday, I cranked a 110 mile ride down there. I didn’t feel bad, but I admit that I didn’t put in my best effort either. Looking at my PowerTap numbers afterwards, I was pretty happy. It wasn’t my best effort down there, but it wasn’t far off. Knowing I hadn’t given it my all, I’m looking forward to my next trip down there in a couple of weeks. For that ride, I plan on focusing on preparing for the ride starting a few days out. Nail my nutrition and rest, and then go down there and try to crush it. Like the alchemists of old, it’s my way of trying to turn lead into gold. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Or getting the lead out!
Nice job dude. I have always wanted to do some desert rides…you make me want it more!

Keep up the good work. I look forward to following your progress. I’m all signed up for Ironman Louisville next August and I’m already anxious. I can’t imagine what you must be going through. I’m both impressed and jealous.
JP - One more big weekend, and I’m in taper mode. I plan on heading back down to the desert tomorrow for a hard solo century. I’m feeling OK, but it’s getting harder to keep the focus…it’s been a long season!
I’m signed up for IM Louisville next year too. I’ll see you on the dock!

Excellent! I’m even more psyched for Louisville now.
Not to steal from the 12-steppers, but take it one day at a time. Reduce the chance of distraction and get the rest you need. We’re pulling for you.
Cheers!
JP
You’re right. At this point, it’s pretty much all mental. I had a good long day today….90 miles on the bike with a 4 mile run afterwards. Tomorrow is 20 mile run. After that, it’s a matter of keeping things loose.
