Fall in Colorado September 12, 2008

Filed under: Just Squawking — Matt Shriver @ 8:55 am

I am in Aspen, Colorado at the moment were the Fall colors are already blazing. The temperatures are much cooler with rain and even some snow last night on the top of the mountains.

What am I doing here you might ask? Since my road season has come to an end I am taking a little break before jumping head on into the Cyclocross racing season in Vegas.  Here in Aspen I have been working with a great group of people at a Diabetic Training Camp.  This opportunity has fallen into my lap through Colorado Premier Training and it has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life so far.  These people are so motivated and focused.  I thought I had it hard trying to recover after a hard days ride. The amount of planning that has to take place to do any kind of training as a Diabetic is completer rocket science. Seriously, so many factors have to be taken into consideration for a Diabetic athlete to train.  I have already learned so much from all of them and it has been very motivating and really inspiring.  After getting over my initial struggles of begining to understand the disease, the camp has gone well.

I am pretty much on a down week here in Aspen but have been doing short rides with the campers.  The mountain bike trails are incredible here at Snowmass Village and luckily the weather has been cooperating up until now.  It feels good to be back out on the mountain bike again.  There was a local mountain bike race here in Aspen on Wednesday night but unfortunately I was unable to compete.  I missed my opportunity to race on the dirt with the “Texan” himself.  Armstrong apparently just bought a place here in Aspen and has been doing some training and racing.  I wonder if I will see him on the trails this weekend preparing for the 12 Hours of Snowmass?

My life points me back to Durango tomorrow.  I am looking forward to getting back to Durango with the Durango Tangs.  Hopeing to ride the mountain bike every day! I am loving it.
