Reaching the Inner Labrador February 8, 2008
It was a long week–yes, even the Live Your Passion crew has to deal with Quickbooks, Sales Tax Returns, filing, and data entry–and I needed to let off a little steam. While I was staring at the wall above my computer monitor, trying to decide what to do, my black Lab, Theo, sauntered in from the hallway. He didn’t do his typical dramatic flop on the floor, but instead walked right up to me, stared at me for a second, and then rested his head on my leg.
I looked down at him. He looked up at me. Big brown eyes and a serious pout. I knew it was serious and didn’t need any animal psychologist to interpret for me. Theo telepathically spoke to me in that instant, in a clear and distinct voice.
“I really, really want to go play in the snow,” he said.
So that’s what we did, and it made a world of difference in my outlook on life and love for my fellow man. We drove ten minutes to the closest patch of wilderness, I strapped on my snowshoes, and we romped for ninety minutes. We wrestled, buried each other, and played “police dog”… his favorite. It goes like this: I run through deep snow as fast as I can and he hurtles after me and latches onto my arm, after which we both tumble in the snow and try to bury each other.
It was great. Sometimes Living Your Passion is about skis, or your bike, or your climing gear. But some days it’s about running around in the woods and wrestling with your dog. Today was that day.
This sums up how we both felt–a far cry from the work malaise I felt just a little earlier:
