Bummer! May 24, 2008

For the first time in 37 years, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has been canceled… due to significant snow! A foot fell in Silverton (that’s right, it’s almost June) and the conditions were deemed too dangerous. I can see by looking at the ridges outside my window that the snowline starts at about 7,000′ so you can imagine what the skinny tires would face over some of the 10,000′-11,000′ passes.
Condolences go out to all the racers and citizen riders… mostly though, I feel for the men and women who set this as a goal for accomplishing something they had never before even considered. People who are not necessarily avid cyclists, but who used this challenging ride as a training goal, maybe as a turning point for finally getting in shape or something like that. I suggest heading down to Carver’s and raising a pint to yourself for successfully getting yourself ready for the challenge. No one can control the weather, and next year will be here before you know it.
Good job, folks.
