What Goes Up, Must Come Down (or the Perils of Having Conditioning that Exceeds Your Skills) March 31, 2009

Today was x-country ski for 90 minutes, downhill ski for a half day (which includes lifting, pulling, picking up, and generally herding 2 kids all over the mountain), carry a sleeping 42-pound 4-year-old half a mile to the car, hike, carry a 50-pound 6-year-old, her x-country skis, and poles a half a mile out of the woods, and swim for an hour, alternating playing sharks with trying to work the kinks out of my shoulder.

Golden

Ah, golden birthdays. 31 on the 31st. First Makiah woke me up by singing happy birthday to me (that or she was doing her typical whining thing for food). Then I got a sweet call from Tom - and he showed me a link to him playing live music at the Quarterback Pub in Bellingham and I got to listen to my favorite songs while sipping a cup of java. Then I got a call from Camile - wishing me happy birthday and I swear I’ve been on the phone with various people since. Thank you for all the birthday wishes - it’s so nice to be thought of on your birthday!

Headed to the spa (free on your birthday!) and then to dinner tonight with the family. Good times, good times. Another 365 days on this planet. Here’s to being only 1/3 of the way!

DO Try This at Home March 28, 2009

Last Sunday, I enjoyed visiting the Hillsborough Sportsplex Tri Club to lead a session on yoga for triathletes. At the end of the practice, one of the participants said, “I know it sounds silly, but it just struck me that I could do yoga on my own at home.”

What marks the progression of time?

Is it the realization that your routines have been forever altered?
The obvious wear and tear of the clothing you wear?
The deepening crows feet that highlight your eyes?
Or the gray hairs that pop up on your scalp that seem to multiply overnight?

Going Long

Filed under: Training and Racing, yoga — Sage Rountree @ 11:04 am

I’m on day 23 of the Big Sit, a meditator’s version of the 100 pushup challenge. (Here, though, you dive right in to twenty minutes of seated meditation each day.) It continues to go very well and repeatedly confirms the parallels between meditation, a physical yoga practice, and endurance sports.

Most days, I settle in about 1:45, leaving myself time to get my wits back about me before beginning the walk to pick up my daughters at the 2:30 elementary school dismissal. My iPhone timer works nicely, playing a soothing harp sound at the end of the alloted time. In three weeks’ practice, I’ve come to get a pretty good sense of how long twenty minutes lasts and of the physical cues that show it’s almost time to finish. Today, though, I realized I was feeling impatient for the session to be over. I swung between wondering if something was wrong with the timer and falling deeper into meditation (or, perhaps, toward nodding off). Eventually I decided I would count ten rounds of ten breaths, then finish sitting. By the fourth round, I heard the 2:20 timer on the computer sound a thunk and my dog begin her Pavlovian reaction to the alarm. Hmm, I thought. As I opened my eyes, I saw a message on the phone: “Timer done.” The harp had never played.
Whatever went wrong (maybe the phone abandoned its timer duties to tune in to the OS 3.0 preview), I’d been still for over thirty minutes, half again as long as I’d planned. It’s a big leap. We are capable of much more than we expect. Diligent practice sets the base, and serendipity—getting lost out on the road or trail, being persuaded by friends to keep going—can show that our limits are nowhere near where we expected.

I woke up several times Saturday morning to the steady drizzle of rain. My eyes finally peeled open for good at 9:30 and I rolled out of bed. Put the coffee on, start making some breakfast, and enjoy the warmth. My hopes of it clearing up outside were quickly lost when I crossed the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

Early season racing is in full effect. Sub 40 degree temps, steady rain, long hard miles.

Lars Holbek

Filed under: Passions — Chet Collins, DC @ 10:10 am

Lars Holbek, whitewater explorer and gentle soul, has finished his ordeal with cancer. He will be missed by those who knew him, and by thousands who followed in his pioneering first descents of rivers across the west. Lars was a person from whom many drew inspiration, to challenge themselves and explore whitewater rivers around the world. May his memory be preserved in each safe eddy we catch, while we follow his lead in exploring the world of whitewater.

Puppy Love and Vo2Max Tests???? March 15, 2009

Filed under: Passions — April Bowling @ 2:29 pm

It’s like Obie’s always been here. The greatest puppy ever. EVER. A complete joy to live with. If you are looking for a dog, are moderately active, are willing to just let the dog be with you a lot (i.e. get followed around the house)…then I would not hesitate to recommend this breed (and breeder). He is so amazing with the kids…all kids. And all dogs. And all people. And gineau pigs and cats for that matter. I feel like our family is complete.
