Are You Living It?

The graphic on the Colorado Avalanche Report was a mess of red and black, colors I’ve associated with death since I started watching cartoons, or playing with Lego’s.  The avalanche “roses” showed EXTREME danger on every possible aspect in the Southern San Juans.  After a massive front blanketed the state with 2-3 feet of cold fresh snow, the crew is itching for a ski session, but our options are limited.

If so, you probably picked up on the fact that I’ve been forced into some positive thinking of late.  You know what they say … When Life gives you lemons, gather them up, throw them back at Life, and say, “What the hell is this?!”  Actually, I think it’s something about making lemonade.  Or drinking it.  Or something.

I went backcountry skiing on Sunday right during the biggest dump in recent Colorado history.  The amount of snow was absolutely unbelievable!!!  It was so deep that it was hard to make turns, and it was so light that a snorkel would certainly have been useful.  I think those are both problems that I’m OK dealing with.  It was a great day!!! 

What started as an attempt to get some exercise this winter despite the sun being long gone has quickly turned into one of my favorite activities.  I’m talking about night running!  Running at night has not only extended the hours with which I can play, but running at night adds a whole new element to the runs.  Not exactly sure what it is about the night runs but man is it fun. 

Yes, a season for everything.  I’d been able to maintain that attitude, I think admirably, right up until the long-awaited moment when the cast came off … that above-the-elbow monstrosity that in the preceding month had come to feel like my very own plaster Siamese twin… was finally going to fall to the saw’s teeth.  (headline:  DOCTORS OPERATE FOR HOURS TO DELICATELY SEPARATE THE TWO!  THEY SHARE THE SAME LIVER!  TEARFUL VIGIL ENSUES!)
