Where I’m Coming From March 14, 2008

My life has always been outdoors. Likely due to being an overactive child, driving my mom nuts, and being sent outside continually! I made it through childhood and upon graduating from college, joined the Professional Leisure Circuit. Seasonally working a Ski Area job, then following the snow-melt as a Whitewater River Guide. Life was easy. I worked at the same place I played. Health and fitness were of no concern as I was active every day. Life had no limits and I bounced back from minor injuries with ease.

My first knee surgery came just one monthbefore the beginning of my second season at the Ski Area. Eight weeks of non-weight-bearing was like a ball and chain for my active lifestyle. Arriving each day to fresh snow, perfect temps, and seeing everyone else skiing was hard to handle. Then a sign from above, or just the sign on the tent, “Demo Day”.  Something clicked in my mind, after six weeks of hobbling over snow and ice on crutches, “maybe they will let me just demo a single ski!”. And they did! I had never realized just how long a green beginner run could be. From then on my recovery was accelerated and I was enjoying each day again. My Orthopedist was not too happy about my risking HIS WORK with MY NEED to be active.

OK, my activity could have led to a setback in my injury, but his comments stayed with me until I gradated as a Doctor of Chiropractic ten years later. Active people and athletes need activity, even when they are injured. My philosophy became, “Let’s find a way to satisfy your need for activity while optimizing your recovery from injury”. This idea is the foundation of my practice.

More to come soon.
