As I wait outside the operating room I am reminded, that of all the activities and sports I thoroughly enjoy, none brings the inner peace and fulfillment of sharing each day with my wife. Whether  I am paddling a river, riding my bike, skiing that perfect line, she is always there. Sometimes she is there in person, other times I think of how much she would enjoy what I am seeing when we are not able to see it together.

Following a meniscus repair operation, she suffered an infection that required 2 more trips into the operating room. The possibility of her knee joint being severely damaged by the infection was of great concern to her. The pain was tolerable with medication, but nothing could control the worry of losing mobility in her knee. As I waited for her each time she went back to surgery, I wished for her to be able to look ahead and see a successful surgery, as there was nothing anyone could do to guarantee a positive outcome.

She made it through all the worry and the pain. She is now home and looking forward to recovery and retraining herself to walk. Sharing these days of worry and recovery with her, that are mixed with improvement and frustration, I will remember for a long time to come. I now realize that sharing the experience and sensation of life, not the activity itself, that is my deepest passion.

That’s well-put, Chet. Experiences like this show us where our passions and motivations come from. Best wishes to your wife as she recovers.
