My Body Is Not Staying On The Schedule I Made For It November 20, 2008

Filed under: Passions, Rest, Training, exercise, injury — Chet Collins, DC @ 10:46 am

It seems the most common pain conditions I see are caused by trying to catch-up on exercise. For a number of reasons people miss, or skip their scheduled exercise routine and then try to make it up as soon as they return to the routine. I just want to remind us all, a few missed days of exercise is not going to make a negative change in our fitness.

Today…I couldn’t make a mile September 13, 2008

Last Sunday I swam, biked, and ran (and let’s be honest here…walked too) 140.6 miles.

Today…I couldn’t make a mile.

Swimming and yoga and walking around in flip flops or bare feet has been ok this week, if a little painful. But as soon as I try to put on sneakers, the outside bottom and side of my left foot screams. It feels like a bone bruise every time I put my foot down. I think I am so flat footed at this point that in bare feet the outside of my foot barely even touches the floor, so that spares me. In athletic shoes that correct my pronation, even a bit, it’s a no go.

Matthias Giraud’s News: Jeremy McGhee August 26, 2008

Looks like I missed a couple posts over the last couple weeks. So, to make it up to you guys, here is something on Jeremy McGhee. Jeremy was in a very bad motorbike accident in his early 20’s and has been in a wheelchair since. This was of course a big change in his life but he chose to still live the dream instead of letting himself down.

Houston, we have a problem… August 20, 2008

Filed under: Passions, Training, injury — April Bowling @ 6:36 am
I’ve been trying to stay really positive and almost ignore this leg problem I’ve had since the quabbin ride, figuring that with some rest and rehab it would resolve itself. But despite trips to PT and massage and babying it for 3 days now, it still ain’t happy.
I feel like that old song…”the hip bone’s connected to the thigh bone..the thigh bone’s connected to the knee bone…” etc. Except mine is, “the gastroch’s connected to the hamstring…the hamstring’s connected to the glutes…the glutes are connected to the IT, the IT’s connected to the knee…”

I did my run that I was supposed to do yesterday today but shortened it. A very easy run…and my leg was ok during it, but it was that uneasy ok where you know that it isn’t going to last. And now, post stretching, my leg and hip is back on fire. And biking just sucks from the get go. At least swimming is good…
But I’m still not panicking and here’s why. This is just pain. As long as I don’t try to sprint or bike up any steep hills, I’m not going to tear anything. So the leg will work. So that makes this different from my post tib tendenosis and dislocation that I had…that can end my race because if the tendon goes there’s no walking let alone running. But so far, it’s hanging in there, and this leg/hip issue is just a literal and extreme pain in the ass.
It won’t be pretty but I can grind my way to the finish in less than 17 hours, even if I’m reduced to a veritable crawl. So at least I came out of training and my race isn’t in jeopardy, just my time. I still see the PT again this week and hopefully if I take it easy this WILL get better. My only fear is that I will start losing fitness by tapering too much too fast…

The 3 P’s August 3, 2008

Passion, Patience, Persevere… these are the three main words that allowed me the opportunity to not only make it through my recovery but to come out of it stronger and more focused as a person and a athlete. The last entry I wrote was about my training for the 2008 season well if you aren’t aware, I was in a pretty nasty crash at the Tour of Gila where I ended up breaking my pelvis in three (my lucky number) places. After a “fun” airplane flight to El Paso where the doctors initially thought I was going to need surgery, I wake up finding out that I was in another state and possibly going under the knife! It was all a whirlwind but luckily I had my coach Michael Engleman there by my side until my mother could fly across the US to help. I ended up not needing surgery and my mom was there to fly me back to SC to start my recovery process. It was a long 3 months of highs and lows, pain medications and crutches for most of it but in hind sight more positive things like seeing my sister Candice graduate from Grad School, attending a friends wedding, and many more. These are all important events in my life that I would’ve missed if I had been racing.

As I wait outside the operating room I am reminded, that of all the activities and sports I thoroughly enjoy, none brings the inner peace and fulfillment of sharing each day with my wife. Whether  I am paddling a river, riding my bike, skiing that perfect line, she is always there. Sometimes she is there in person, other times I think of how much she would enjoy what I am seeing when we are not able to see it together.

Keirin Crash July 22, 2008

You may have heard about this already - but on Saturday during a elite men’s Keirin, a HUGE crash happened taking out the entire field. Fortunately everyone walked away - although some equipment was ruined. As youwatch the slow motion - check out the wheel that goes flying through the air - the fork is still attached.

Finishing the Job July 4, 2008

June was an interesting month for me. I had two half ironman races planned for this month. Back in December, when I planned out my season, I’d hoped to do well at both of these races. Life has a funny way of changing our best laid plans. Sometimes you’ve gotta roll with the punches.

Elkhorns and Osteoporosis June 25, 2008

What a weekend. The Elkhorn Classic in Baker City, Oregon was a blast. It was definitely the hardest race I have ridden. Beginning with the hot, dry 70 mile Oregon Trail Road Race in stage 1, we were treated with difficult races throughout our 3 days in Eastern Oregon. Each stage seemed to be designed to fulfill every bike racer’s constant need for suffering on the bike! :)

Balancing Act June 15, 2008

Filed under: Cycling, Passions, Training, injury — Chet Collins, DC @ 4:17 pm

Since my little abrasive episode last week, I have been healing up pretty well. I am now free of those pesky bandages that bind every movement and can finally stretch out my sore muscles. A few days into the healing process, I developed a low grade fever and and the inguinal lymph nodes were swollen and sore on my injured side. I had to decide whether to take antibiotics, or let my immune system chip away at the infection.  If the infection gets worse, I take a 10 day course of broad spectrum antibiotics and kill the infection along with my normal intestinal flora. If I continue to fight it off, I don’t have the energy to ride until the infection is gone.
