Good Stories Keep You Going August 5, 2008
(me at RI 70.3 - please note the empty T2 racks around me, thank you)
(Pete at Lowell)
Pete wanted me to point out that he’s not the ONLY one slow in transition…but at least I’m not sitting comfortably in my spot
All that kept me going through my run on sunday was Joel’s story of having heartburn for 7 HOURS of the P-B-P (the 750 mile bike race he qualified for and did last year in France…that’s 750 miles STRAIGHT in 60 hours) during which time he could neither eat, nor drink. And had to continue biking at 20+mph in the pouring rain. Kinda makes you think….well, this run could be worse. I mean the guy had heartburn and didn’t eat for longer than my whole bike leg will be (baring unforseen disaster) at IMWI. Ouch. Ankle is still tweaked but not as badly as last week. My friend Rob is going to tape it this morning before I run and we’ll see how that goes. I’ll probably just put the tape in my special needs bag to carry me through the last 13 miles if things get quite bad. I am a bit worried since I haven’t been able to go over 15 or 16 miles this year without it starting to hurt. It’s not the pain that’s the issue…I can live with that. It’s the fear of tearing that post-tib tendon…and hopefully taping it will help decrease the instability so that the liklihood of avulsion becomes less. We’ll see. Fortunately, the official Ironman rules allow that for non-disabled athletes “no mode of locomotion shall be used (on the run course) other running, walking, or crawling.” So at least crawling is an option, a la Julie Moss.
