Excelling at mediocrity August 3, 2008

I try to be pretty upbeat in my posts, but I also believe in keeping it real. And right now, I am REALLY crabby and beat up.

I got my ass handed to me on the bike yesterday (4 hours of being SHELLED by Joel, Courtney and Bob), got it handed to me again on the swim yesterday (at least I beat Courtney - but not by much!), and handed to me on the run today. Can’t I be good at anything???

Tomorrow, when I have recovered from my 22 miles of mediocrity, I will post a glowing post including video of my husband’s awesome performance in the Lowell Olympic tri today - 2:22 - but for now I will just bitch about him…I mean WTF???

The guy rides a friggin’ falling apart fugi bike that he bought for like $400 bucks, he sits down in transition and hunts through his bag to find his CHAPSTICK, he can’t even freaking train the run because of his knees (he literally does about 5 miles A WEEK), and he wears a surf wetsuit to swim in…and then he throws down a performance that would probably beat my pants off. Thank God I was just a spectator today. Oh, and did I mention he’s 21 years my senior?

I repeat again…WTF?

I get that he’s been working out 2 hours a day, everyday, for the last 40 years, but still, that’s kind of ridiculous. I am so irritated.

But I am also very proud.

I wish that I could be proud of my 3 hour and 40 minute friggin’ run today. That’s right…you do the math. It ain’t pretty.

Janda…have you ever run more than 3 hours IN YOUR LIFE??? Of course that would mean about a 30 mile run. Speaking of which I met this awesome guy at the tri today from Brazil…turns out he was a pro runner in the 90’s and won the San Fran marathon and some others when he ran for Nike (2:12 PR). He happened upon the race today and settled in to watch and we started talking. He goes, “these people are crazy!” And I was like, dude, you won marathons…how are you not crazy? And he goes, “yeah, but I never ran for more than a couple hours! I swear, if it was 26.3 instead of 26.2 I wouldn’t have made it.”

He had me in stitches…I laughed even harder when he asked me if I was a pro triathlete…if only he’d seen me finish my run at 7pm tonight…
